The Crisis Kit: 5 Tools for Helping Clients Through Turbulent Times

The Crisis Kit

A note from the team here at PositivePsychology.com, concerning COVID-19…

Like many of you, our hearts are heavy with concerns for the global community’s wellbeing.

We believe that now, more than ever, positive psychology can really help lift others up.

That is why we have decided that we will do everything in our power to help you help those you care for.

We have created a brand new resource, The Crisis Kit: 5 Tools For Helping Clients Through Turbulent Times”, containing five of the most relevant, science-based tools to help you help others navigate turbulence and uncertainty.

You can download it here, for free:

For one tool, “Eye of the Hurricane Meditation”, we have also included a guided meditation version.

You can download the audio file here

or listen to the YouTube version here.

Upon opening the PDF, you will find the following tools:

  • Eye of the Hurricane Meditation
  • Dealing With Uncontrollable Circumstances
  • The Unwanted Guest
  • Window of Tolerance
  • My Resilience Plan (The Four S’s)

These are some of the best tools we know of for helping people to:

  • Use their mental resources well
  • Connect to a place of inner peace
  • Become aware of factors within and beyond personal control
  • Practice acceptance-based coping
  • Remain calm and composed in the face of stress

We hope that through this resource, you can find more ways to be of help to those you care about.

This is good and sounds practical. In my mind, I will rearrange the 5 items as follows:
    1) Anchor on your inner peace
    2) keep calm
    3) Be aware of the factors outside your control and how it affects you
    4) Use your mental resources
    5) Practice “acceptance based” coping
This is good for organisations in this time of crisis

Dear Hugo, Thanks so much for this, its extremely useful both for me and some immediate friends. I have been asked some questions that I in no way feel qualified to answer. Perhaps it would be possible to give me some direction.
Many people are now confined to their homes due the circumstances we now find ourselves in. Many people previously had a form of escape from abusive relationships from partners and parents by going to work and school etc, now they find themselves in permanent close proximity to their abusers. A very difficult situation no doubt, with no absolute solutions.
What would be the best course of action for people finding themselves in this situation?
    Wishing you well,
    Sean.

As a school counsellor, I do encounter many students who face things that they cannot control often because they are simply too young, or because they are caught in the middle amongst the grown-ups and their problems. So, this will not only be useful in the current atmosphere, but in my daily work.

Great reading too, reminding us of what we have control of and what we can’t control. Enjoyed the unwanted guest section. This is a real godsend. I have shared it with my colleagues at Montcalm Area Intermediate Schools. an area with many children of trauma in mid-Michigan and will also be sharing it with Kadima Center in Southfield, Michigan. Kadima is a center for disabled adults. My niece lives there in one of their 22 residential homes. They operate a day program (closed for COBID-19) and offer therapy on-site. I am keeping my balance by looking at the Rogue River and enjoying my kitties. I am also working on a PowerPoint on Resilience- seems like a great area of focus for this perilous time. I am so grateful to be part of the Positive Psychology community. I have a daily meditation practice guided by Calm.com and highly recommend this site.

Thanks for making this available. I have read a number of your exercises and found them to be very helpful. I have not used these with clients yet, but am very impressed with the materials plan to use them with others in the near term.
